How to choose home internet in Kazakhstan (2026): GPON, FTTB or ADSL, and how much speed you really need
A plain guide to home internet technologies in Kazakhstan — GPON/FTTH fibre, FTTB and ADSL — how many Mbit/s a household actually needs, what makes up the price, and what to check in the contract.
Home internet is the one connectivity service you cannot simply buy: first you need to know which cable reaches your building. That determines the speed, the price and which providers you can even choose from. Here is a short guide to the terms and to picking a plan without overpaying.
1. Technology first, plan second
Providers describe the same "up to 100 Mbit/s" in different words, but what matters is how the signal gets into your home.
| Technology | What reaches the home | Realistic ceiling | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GPON / FTTH | Fibre straight into the apartment or house | 300–1000 Mbit/s | New buildings, private sectors with new networks |
| FTTB | Fibre to the basement, copper up the stairwell | Usually up to 100 Mbit/s | Most apartment blocks from 2000–2015 |
| Ethernet | Twisted pair from the provider's switch in the building | 10–500 Mbit/s | Local operators, smaller cities |
| ADSL | The ordinary phone line | 1 to ~20 Mbit/s, depends on the line | Older housing, villages, areas without fibre |
The takeaway: if fibre (GPON or FTTH) is available at your address, take it, even at a slightly higher price. Fibre gives stable latency, symmetric upload and headroom for years. FTTB is fine for one or two people. ADSL is worth considering only where nothing else exists.
How to find out what is available at your address is covered in our article on checking availability by address.
2. How many Mbit/s you actually need
The speed in a plan is an "up to" ceiling. Real needs are far more modest than the advertising suggests:
- One or two people, browsing, messengers, HD video — 50–100 Mbit/s is enough.
- A family of 3–4, several TVs, video calls, online school — 200–300 Mbit/s so nobody gets in each other's way.
- 4K streaming on several screens, gaming, remote work with large files, a smart home — 500 Mbit/s and up.
Paying for a gigabit only makes sense if you have a gigabit router, modern Wi-Fi 6 devices and real workloads for that bandwidth.
Important: the bottleneck is usually the router, not the plan. A cheap 2.4 GHz device physically cannot deliver more than 50–80 Mbit/s over Wi-Fi. A plan of 300 Mbit/s or more needs a router with a 5 GHz band (Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6).
3. What makes up the price
In 2026 the monthly fee for home internet in Kazakhstan mostly falls between 4,500 and 10,000 ₸, but you need to compare the full cost, not the first number on the website.
- Promo period. Many providers give new customers 50% off for the first 1–3 months. After that the price returns to normal — and that is the figure to compare.
- Contract. Discounts for a 12-, 24- or 36-month commitment can reach 25–30% of the no-commitment price, but if you leave early you usually pay the difference back. See our article on contracts and early termination.
- Equipment. The ONT modem for fibre, the Wi-Fi router and the TV box are often rented at 400–600 ₸ a month each. Some providers include the router in the plan.
- Installation. Usually free, but in the private sector or when cabling inside the apartment it can be charged.
- Bundles. Internet + TV is typically 1,000–2,000 ₸ more than internet alone, and bundles with mobile SIMs can beat separate plans if the family already uses that operator.
4. Checklist before you connect
- Confirm the technology and maximum speed at your address, not "for the plan".
- Ask whether the router is included or must be rented or bought.
- Find out the price after the promo period and when the promotion ends.
- If you take a contract, ask to see the early-termination terms.
- Check whether the TV box is in the monthly fee and how many screens it serves.
- Compare an "internet + SIM" bundle with the sum of your current mobile plans.
Bottom line
Choosing home internet comes down to three steps: learn which technology is available at your address, be honest about the speed you need, and count the full cost including the promo period, equipment rental and contract. Current plans from Kazakhtelecom, Beeline, Transtelecom, almaPLUS, Freedom Telecom, activ and Meganet, filterable by technology, speed and bundle contents, are collected in our home internet catalogue.
