A 12-, 24- or 36-month home internet contract: how much you save and what happens if you leave early

How home internet contracts and promo prices work in Kazakhstan: we calculate the real savings over the term, explain the discount claw-back on early termination, price guarantees and prepayment discounts.

Almost every provider lists a second, noticeably lower price next to the "no commitment" one — for a one-, two- or three-year contract. The gap looks attractive, but the contract contains terms that turn the discount into an obligation. Here is how it works and how to decide whether it is worth it.

Three kinds of "cheaper than usual"

Providers use different mechanics, and they should not be confused:

  1. A promo period for new customers. 50% off for the first 1–3 months (sometimes the first month for a token amount). There is usually no commitment, but after the promo the price returns to the base rate.
  2. A fixed-term contract. A price below the base rate for the whole term — 12, 24 or 36 months — in exchange for a promise not to cancel. It often comes with a price guarantee: the provider promises not to raise the fee until the term ends.
  3. A prepayment discount. You pay 6–12 months upfront and get 3–24% off. No future obligation, but the money is already paid.

Working out the savings on a real example

Take a typical grid from one provider for a 100 Mbit/s plan:

TermsMonthly priceOver 36 months
No commitment5,500 ₸198,000 ₸
12-month contract5,000 ₸180,000 ₸
24-month contract4,500 ₸162,000 ₸
36-month contract4,000 ₸144,000 ₸

The three-year contract saves 54,000 ₸ — almost ten months of internet for free. That is a genuine gain if you really will live at this address for three years and will not want to switch providers.

What happens on early termination

This is where the main condition hides. Typical wording in Kazakhstani providers' contracts comes down to three variants:

  • Claw-back of the accumulated discount. The most common scheme: the provider recalculates everything you paid at the no-commitment price and bills the difference. Leave a 36-month contract after 12 months and you pay 12 × (5,500 − 4,000) = 18,000 ₸.
  • A fixed penalty or payment for the remaining term. Less common, and usually tied to equipment handed over "for free" on condition of the contract.
  • Free exit on relocation. Some providers let you move the contract to a new address if service is available there. Ask in advance — it is the best option for tenants.

The rule is simple: before signing, ask to see the early-termination clause and work out what leaving after 6 and 12 months would cost.

Price guarantee — when it matters

A provider may index no-commitment plans, usually with 30 days' notice. A contract with a price guarantee protects you from increases for the whole term. If prices rise 5–10% a year, over three years that adds several thousand tenge to the savings. But the guarantee applies only to the plan in the contract: changing plans mid-term usually voids it.

Promo prices: how not to be caught out

A promo period is not a trick, but the arithmetic changes when you look at a year rather than the first bill:

  • A 7,499 ₸ plan with 50% off for 3 months costs 78,745 ₸ a year, or 6,562 ₸ a month on average.
  • A 6,490 ₸ plan with no promo costs 77,880 ₸ a year — cheaper, even though it looked more expensive for the first three months.

Count the total over 12 months, or better, over the time you expect to live in the home.

Which option suits whom

  • Renting or planning to move — take a plan with no commitment or with a promo period; the contract savings will not cover the penalty.
  • Your own home and a provider you are happy with — a 24- or 36-month contract with a price guarantee is almost always worth it.
  • Spare cash — a prepayment discount gives a similar gain with no future obligation, but make sure any unused balance is refunded if you disconnect.

Bottom line

An internet contract pays off only for people who are sure they will not change address or provider before the term ends. Before signing, calculate the total for the term, learn the exit cost and check whether there is a price guarantee. All three kinds of terms — the regular price, the contract grid and promo periods — are shown directly on the cards of our home internet catalogue so the comparison stays honest.
